Every Saturday Through March
Although the amount of trash and debris that Hurricane Helene left behind in Swannanoa is daunting to say the least, we can make a difference if we all work together. This was clearly demonstrated on Saturday, January 18, when Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS) sponsored our first post-Helene Swannanoa community cleanup.
More than 100 people showed up on a less-than-ideal weather day and proved just how much an enthusiastic and energetic group of volunteers can accomplish in a few hours. It was nothing short of amazing. Cleaning up Swannanoa will be an ongoing and monumental task, but it sure felt good to make some progress!
Building on the great energy from that first cleanup, FANS has decided to make the community cleanups a weekly event, beginning Saturday, February 8. The idea is to maximize volunteer efforts during the winter dormancy period, so that we can get as much trash and debris removed before underbrush starts growing and makes removal more difficult. So come join your neighbors and lend a hand on Saturday mornings though March 29. Let’s see how much we can get done by the time spring rolls around!
