We are excited to welcome Town Hardware to Swannanoa and to see a longtime local business expanding its presence in the valley.
For generations, Town Hardware has been a trusted resource for homeowners, contractors, businesses, and organizations throughout the Black Mountain Valley. Beyond providing quality products and knowledgeable service, they have consistently been strong community partners, supporting local initiatives and helping make our region a better place to live and work.
The addition of a Town Hardware location in Swannanoa comes at an important time. As our community continues to recover and rebuild following Hurricane Helene, convenient access to hardware, tools, home repair supplies, paint, plumbing materials, electrical components, lawn and garden products, and other essentials fills a real need for residents and businesses alike. Having these resources available closer to home will make it easier for many people to complete projects, maintain their properties, and continue rebuilding efforts.
Town Hardware’s investment in Swannanoa is also another positive step for Beacon Village and the surrounding community. Each new business that chooses to invest here contributes to the area’s growing energy and momentum. Their presence will add to the vibrancy of Beacon Village, create another destination for residents and visitors, and help strengthen the sense of community that continues to define Swannanoa’s future.
We are grateful that Town Hardware has chosen to become part of this next chapter for Swannanoa. Their history of service, commitment to the community, and reputation for helping customers find the right solutions make them a welcome
The store is located at 119 Alexander Place in a 4,200-square-foot brick building that holds plenty of its own history. It was originally Ward’s Drug Store and later Berry’s Farm Supply, but it spent nearly 25 years sitting vacant before this project began. The Ballhaussens preserved a piece of that heritage, keeping a historic vintage clock from the old drug store on display inside.
While the Black Mountain location is known for its general store nostalgia and gifts, the Swannanoa shop skips the gift wrap and gets straight to work. The “General Store” title was intentionally dropped here because the entire building is focused on practical, heavy-duty hardware. Inside, nine dense aisles are packed with professional-grade tools, fasteners, plumbing, and electrical supplies. A dedicated outdoor area handles landscaping needs and equipment rentals, and the inclusion of a small engine repair service is a crucial addition designed to help residents maintain their own chainsaws, mowers, and machinery.
This opening is a major anchor for the independent business block on Alexander Place, joining neighbors like Blunt Pretzels, Short Sleeves Coffee, and Rite Buy Grocery in bringing steady foot traffic and economic energy back to the center of the community. Peter Ballhaussen noted that having a hardware store right in the center of town brings the people down here who are working to rebuild Swannanoa, while representing a deep personal investment into the community.
